Selecting Machines for Oil Analysis

Brian Hrischuk, Fluid Service Manager, Morrell Inc.

My first task would be to define which system are more critical than other systems, when you are looking to evaluate over 4000 systems for oil analysis one must be cautious not to overextend yourself on this issue. Once I have defined the critical systems I would look at the machine history of component repair and downtime. I would then take a portable particle counter and find out what the ISO cleanliness levels are on the critical machines. From that point I would make a recommended ISO code by system pressure and components on the system for each machine. Once that has been accomplished, I would start the process of offline filtration for dirt particulates and and Vacuum Dehydration for water and dirt removal. From that point you will want to monitor the oil to make sure you are maintaining the ISO code that is required you each individual system. Once that has been accomplished you will want to then move to the balance of the machines that need to be addressed.
