Developing a Motor Bearing Regreasing Strategy

Lanse Carpenter, Reliability Engineer, Celanese Acetate

1. Start by setting a plant wide standard for new motors to have regreasable bearings. Record the new motors in a lubrication database with it's location to be included in a lubrication route.

2. Begin with the most recently installed motors and work back to motors less than 3 years old. Gather information on these motors to determine if they have sealed or open bearings. Add all motors with open bearings to the lubrication route.

3. Require regreaseable bearings and grease fittings be installed in all rebuilt motors from your motor rebuild shop. Add rebuilt motors to the lubrication route.

4. As motors fail, replace them with motors with regreaseable bearings and add them to the lubrication route.

5. All critical motors to be monitored on a vibration route. Motors with sealed bearings or unknown bearings will be replaced with motors with regreaseable bearings when motor vibration reaches vibration alarm levels. Eventually all motors will be replaced and join the motors being regularly lubricated in the database.
