Developing a Motor Bearing Regreasing Strategy

Patrick McCaffery, RCM/RCA Coordinator, Rochester Film Sensitizing Eastman Kodak Company

Once a determination of critical equipment is complete the best method for determining any maintenance strategy is Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM). For some instances the best maintenance strategy would be to run to failure.

An example would be a bathroom exhaust fan. In most cases the effect of such failure over a given time of 10 to 20 years would not make it cost effective to have this on a lubrication route. The consequence of a turbine used for generating electrical power, would certainly warrant the cost of performing lubrication, vibration analysis and any other analytical method available.

Once you establish the need for lubrication, you should consult with the lubricant supplier to determine the best frequency for lubrication, the type of lubricant and the amount of lubricant required.
