Today's Tip: Alternative to Synthetics

Severely hydro processed and hydrocracked base stocks may be a suitable alternative to PAO synthetic lubricants for many applications, at a much lower cost. Some of these lubricants have very high viscosity indices and excellent resistance to oxidation and thermal failure.

Book Bits: How Many Lube Techs Do You Need?

One question I commonly get during training classes is: "Our plant has X number of machines. How many lube techs do we need to do a proper job of lubricating them?" While the question may seem simple, the answer is not. You see, it depends on a number of factors.

First and foremost, we must consider physical plant layout. While it may be easy for one technician to maintain 500-plus machines that are laid out in a linear fashion on a single floor, many sites - particularly older plants where expansion has forced machines into every nook and cranny - take more time for even the most experienced tech to navigate, particularly where stairs are involved.

Q & A: Controlling Microbial Growth

"To what extent does the presence of microbial growth affect the quality of lube oil, and how can this be controlled?"

Microbial contamination is a pro-oxidant and forms acid products in the oil. Additives are also adversely affected. Over time insoluble suspensions can lead to sludge, deposits, and viscosity change.

Filters will plug and oilways will obliterate. Usually the best strategy for controlling micro-organisms is to control water contamination. Without water the bacteria can't survive. For water-based lubricants there are biocides available as well.
