Today's Tip: Prevent Costly Downtime and Repairs

Without a proper lubrication program, plant managers run the risk of lost revenue through downtime, repair and damaged equipment, in addition to poor reliability and high energy consumption due to friction, noise and vibration. To maintain peak production efficiency, plant managers and personnel should follow these simple steps.

Book Bits: Water Awareness

Water Effect on System Fluids
"Water as a contaminant in the system fluid promotes oxidation and creates oxide particles, slimes and resins. Other more subtle effects also occur: conductivity increases, emulsions are created, and microbial growth is promoted. The combined effects result in the formation of a non-Newtonian fluid having thixotropic properties.

Tip: Reduce Oil Consumption by Changing Applicator

A customer was using 300 gallons a week to lubricate 26 saw drive chains. This was the norm: more oil means better lubrication. The company was able to reduce the volume by adjusting the timing controls by 50 percent, or 150 gallons a week.

I was called in to observe reducing the oil on these same chains. The current system had 26 solenoid valves with an open pipe over the chain. It was controlled by a PLC with timers. This was intermittent and the chain needed a continuous delivery of lubrication. The company has an air/oil demo unit currently running on one chain. We calculate it will use only 15 gallons per week on all 26 chains, and that the chain lubricated by the air/oil unit is also running 8 deg f cooler than the existing system chains.
