Remove Buildup and Improve Bearing Life

When vibration analysis is indicating that the lube schedule has become inadequate it can mean there is a buildup of thickener in the bearing housing. If regreasing does not reduce vibration energy levels it is time to isolate the equipment and clean out the old grease and repack. You will see a significant decrease in energy levels which will greatly increase bearing life. (Patrick Walsh, Maintenance Specialist, BHP Billiton)

Book Bits: Grease Gun Variation Is Tricky

From the book "Lubrication for Industry"

Differing grease guns are not built to the same design specifications, therefore their displacement output volume, or "shot" size, will likely be different. This poses huge problems when a PM task asks for 2 shots of grease and the grease guns employed are not standardized: 2 shots of a 3cc displacement gun will deliver six times more lubricant than 2 shots of a 0.5cc displacement gun.

Should You Filter Hydraulic Pump
and Motor Case Drains?

Filters in a hydraulic system maintain fluid cleanliness at a level that maximizes component life. The appropriate cleanliness level is based on factors such as operating pressure and the internal clearances of components within a system. Given that the objective of this process is to extend the service life of components in a system, it is imperative to understand that some filter locations can have the opposite effect.
