Minimizing Air Entrainment in Hydraulic Fluids

Return lines into hydraulic reservoirs should be larger than the intake line and should generally be positioned below the surface of the oil to minimize air entrainment. Locate the return line as far away from the suction as possible to allow the oil as much residence time as possible. If this is not possible, install a baffle or weir between the suction and discharge lines. One suggestion to improve oil flow in the reservoir is to cut the return line at an angle so that it directs flow back toward the tank wall.

Acidity in degraded lubricant and hydraulic fluids corrodes system components. Corrosion combined with erosion gives enhanced wear rates, particularly in systems with mixed metals in contact by electro-chemical effects. Corrosion can also generate solid debris within the system leading to clogging of tubes, filters, and obstruction of system operation. In collaboration with water, corrosion leads to rust formation.

As consumers and manufacturers of all kinds of products, we are often asked to sort out the claims and counterclaims of advertisers and marketers. That's understandable and will continue in any competitive society. Being informed and focused, and always aiming to "compare apples with apples" is both beneficial and appropriate.

A good example of the "apples to apples" axiom is the European technical publication wherein an engineer from the United Kingdom reported on the adverse effects of moisture intrusion on bearing life. He made a reasonable point that users must guard against lube contamination and that bearing protector seals incorporating the rotating labyrinth principle make economic sense.
