Temperature as Bearing Lubrication Indicator

When a properly packed bearing starts up, there will be an initial rise in the temperature while the grease disperses throughout the bearing and housing, before falling off to a steady operating temperature. If the temperature does not lower then there is too much grease in the bearing, or there is a problem with the bearing fit.

Advice for Training Operators that Perform Lubrication

From the book "Preventive Maintenance"

If operators are going to be involved in performing minor adjustments or servicing the equipment, they will require technical training. One of the major mistakes companies make when involving operators in this area is their failure to provide the training to make the operator's efforts successful. For example, if operators are to lubricate the equipment, they should be trained to insure they apply the correct lubricant; they apply the correct amount, they use the correct application method; they know where each fitting is located; they apply the lubricant at the correct frequency; they clean the fitting before and after lubricating it.

Risky Bearing Pre-Lubes During Turbine Startup

Question: What do you get when you mix half a bottle of oil, a popular aftermarket engine oil additive and water? Answer: Trouble - if that is not how the additive is supposed to be used!

One technician employed at a power company believed an aftermarket product was causing problems with his company's turbine lubricant management program. He tested his hypothesis and proved that aftermarket additives can create problems if they are not used in the manner for which they were intended. Click to continue reading article ...
