Advice for Anti Seize Compound Application

In the process of placing high-speed, oil-filled bearing housings back together, if an anti seize compound is used for the bolts, be extra careful not to apply too much. If an excessive amount is applied, it can enter the housing faces during torquing and make its way into the oil bath. This, in turn, can bring about early bearing failure due to the incompatibility of the oil and anti seize compound mixing and subsequently making its way into the load zone. Choosing the right viscosity of synthetic oil helps increase bearing reliability. Antifriction bearings operate best with a minimum film thickness, which is related to viscosity at operating temperature.

Careless Lubricant Storage Is Costly

From "The Practical Handbook of Machinery Lubrication"

Careful, well-planned lubricant storage is essential if contamination and problems associated with severe temperature changes are to be avoided. Costly lawsuits have been fought unnecessarily because lubricant users unwittingly allowed stored lubricants to become contaminated with water, additive or grease thickener separation occurred, or severe temperature changes caused other problems such as oil oxidation or freezing in storage.

Color-Coding
Too often the wrong lubricant is put into the wrong piece of equipment, which can cause an incompatibility problem that can lead to failure. Avoid cross contamination and misapplication with Spectrum Products. They ensure the correct lubricant is added to the right piece of equipment.

Lube Trivia: Specific and API Gravity

Test your knowledge and prepare for ICML lubrication and oil analysis certification.

Question: The specific gravity and API gravity relate to the density of oils. For water, what are the specific gravity and API gravity?

Failure Analysis for Plain Bearings

The textbook cases of distress modes are especially useful in diagnosing problems prior to the damage that occurs when a bearing can no longer support an oil film.

Through the prudent use of temperature and vibration monitoring equipment, routine oil analysis, lubrication system evaluations and machine operational performance reviews, bearing distress may be identified and evaluated before catastrophic failure occurs. Read the article ...
