Bearing Installation Advice for Optimal Lubrication

Spherical roller bearings with a lubrication groove and three lubrication holes in the outer ring should be oriented correctly when mounting inside the machine. This is to ensure that there is adequate amount of lubricant in the outer ring raceway of the bearing. Make sure the lubrication hole is not located at the six o'clock position otherwise the lubricant will drain out from the bearing and reduce the level of lubricant inside the bearing. This tip is very important for bearing lubrication with grease, oil spray or oil drop lubrication. (Veera Anantaratikun, SKF)

Are Grease Guns Getting Calibrated?

From "Industry Practices for Electric Motor Bearing Lubrication"

Grease gun delivery volume (per shot) may vary greatly from one grease gun to the next. Knowing the delivery volume of grease guns is critical to avoiding over- or underlubrication. Also, calibrating grease guns occasionally is a good idea to ensure proper volume of delivery. When asked if grease guns were stamped or marked with the calibrated grease volume (per shot) and date, only 12 percent said "yes."

It was also asked how often the calibration of grease volume was checked. Surprisingly, 88 percent of people surveyed said either "never" or "not sure".

The HIAC PODS
(Portable Diagnostic Oil System)

offers flexibility in sampling with an online or lab/bottle mode for multi-variant analysis of particle counts, viscosity and temperature. Capable of calibration to full ISO 11171 standards, the PODS performs in harsh environments, accurately monitoring hydraulic and lubricating fluids.

How to Fix a High Particle Count
Diagnosing and correcting a high particle count can result in a lot of wasted time and money. Whether you've just begun a lubricant contamination control program or have been monitoring contaminant levels for years, you know how disturbing it is to discover a high particle count. Acting quickly is important, but troubleshooting without a plan often results in unnecessary work and wasteful lubricant and filter use. Instead of throwing time and money at the problem, learn Jim Fitch's specific steps to fixing a high particle count in this informative session at Lubrication Excellence 2009.
