Advice for Inspecting Bulk Lubricant Containers |
|
Totes, or sometimes called jumbos, are highly susceptible to entry of dirt or water if not properly maintained. These containers typically contain 400 to 500 gallons of oil or 3000 to 4000 lbs. of grease and are often used to deliver bulk lubricants to maintenance shops. Most are top fill units with either a compression ring or break over hatch with a neoprene or cork sealing gasket and top mounted air breathers.
The seals can become cracked, broken, or misaligned and the air breathers can be easily broken or vibrate loose during transportation and handling. The integrity of the seals and air breathers should be routinely inspected to prevent dust, sand, water and other contaminants entering the tote during transportation and use. Like any other new oil supply, it's always advisable to pre-filter new oils from totes before use.

The HIAC PODS
(Portable Diagnostic Oil System)
offers flexibility in sampling with an online or lab/bottle mode for multi-variant analysis of particle counts, viscosity and temperature. Capable of calibration to full ISO 11171 standards, the PODS performs in harsh environments, accurately monitoring hydraulic and lubricating fluids.

Causes of Engine Oil Consumption |
|
From "Engine Oils and Automotive Lubrication"
As piston rings and cylinder walls wear, cylinder bores become polished, piston rings tend to stick and oil seals harden and become ineffective, their restriction on oil flow into the combustion chamber or the atmosphere diminishes and oil consumption increases. This can be a gradual long term effect but with the sudden sticking of a piston ring or breakage of an oil seal, oil consumption will suddenly rise.

When to Use Automatic Grease Applicators |
|
There are two primary reasons to select automatic application: improved quality of lubrication and/or reducing man-hour requirements for grease application. This article compares automatic lubrication to other methods and describes the best applications for using single-point lubricators.
