Causes of Motor Oil Alkalinity Changes

Changes in an oil's BN (Base Number) can be caused by several things: high sulfur fuel, fuel dilution, poor combustion, excessive blow-by, soot contamination, oxidation, overheating, extended drains, wrong oil, and glycol dilution.

Does Freezing Harm Lubricants?

From "The Practical Handbook of Machinery Lubrication"

Conventional soluble oils may also be affected by freezing, by destroying the emulsifying properties. Severe conditions may sometimes give the product a cloudy look, but freezing may not always cause a change in the product's appearance, however it will not emulsify properly with water when put into service. This is an example where a user may blame the oil supplier, when in fact there was nothing wrong with the product initially.
