Q & A

Tackling a Big Task

“The more I learn about proactive maintenance and contamination control, the more I get excited about the opportunities that we have in our plant. In our paper mill, I don’t think anyone has paid attention to lubricant cleanliness in years, so we definitely have our work cut out for us. Where do you think the best place to start is?”

While it sounds like quite the task to tackle this type of project, you probably have the makings of a great turn-around story. Not to mention, a great chance to save your company big money.

There are hundreds of ways to extend oil and machine life, but perhaps the best place to start is documentation. It’s best to know where you came from, so that you don’t go there again. Start by getting a baseline. What is the cleanliness level of the oil in each machine now? How much have you been spending in replacement parts? Labor expenses for repairs? Lubricant purchases? Downtime? Meantime between failures?

Documenting and charting your progress not only gives you great feedback, but it could help you keep your program (maybe your job) down the road.

Book Bits

"Particles, especially catalytic metal particles like copper, iron and lead increase the rate at which oxidation occurs. Particles strip the oil of its polar additives, including anti- wear additives, extreme pressure additives, rust inhibitors and dispersants. Also, numerous very small particles in stable suspension can cause the oil's viscosity to increase."
