• Keeping good records of lubricant usage is an important part of a lubrication program. Recording and plotting lubricant consumption by department will help you:

  • Spot excessive use of lubricants

  • Check compliance with the lubrication schedule

  • Discover excessive oil leaks or overlubrication

Recording lubricant usage for each machine can also be helpful. If there is excessive lubricant consumption and machine failures, the data may reveal:

• Incorrect lubricant

• Misapplication of machinery

• Unfavorable operating conditions

• Poorly engineered installation

Water as a contaminant in the system fluid promotes oxidation and creates oxide particles, slimes, and resins. Other more subtle effects also occur: conductivity increases, emulsions are created, and microbial growth is promoted. The combined effects result in the formation of a non-Newtonian fluid having thixotropic properties.
