Keeping good records of lubricant usage is an important part of a lubrication program. Recording and plotting lubricant consumption by department will help you:
Spot excessive use of lubricants
Check compliance with the lubrication schedule
Discover excessive oil leaks or overlubrication
Recording lubricant usage for each machine can also be helpful. If there is excessive lubricant consumption and machine failures, the data may reveal:
Incorrect lubricant
Misapplication of machinery
Unfavorable operating conditions
Poorly engineered installation

Water as a contaminant in the system fluid promotes oxidation and creates oxide particles, slimes, and resins. Other more subtle effects also occur: conductivity increases, emulsions are created, and microbial growth is promoted. The combined effects result in the formation of a non-Newtonian fluid having thixotropic properties.
