Q & A

"I have a critical piece of machinery that production will not stop in order to change the filter. How can I know that the fluid is always being filtered?"

The following are two options to allow the machine to continue operating while an element is replaced; however, do consider the safety implications of working near the machinery while it is in operation.

The first option is a service by-pass valve that will allow the oil to continue to circulate in a by-pass loop while the bowl is removed and the element is replaced.

The second option is to fit a duplex housing which has two elements, only one of which is in circuit at any time. When the one element blocks, a valve can be switched to bring the second element into the circuit, taking the first out, thus allowing a new element to be fitted at a less frenetic pace. For high pressure systems, discuss your needs with the manufacturer because a duplex housing will need a pressurizing option before the flow can be switched.

Book Bits

From the book "The Practical Handbook of Machinery Lubrication":

When greasing an application where there is no seal, such as heavily loaded chassis shackle pins- or pins and bushings on blades or buckets, two or three shots of grease should be applied at the beginning of every shift. In particularly dusty, dirty conditions associated with agriculture, mining or quarrying applications, it is necessary to re-lubricate more frequently to purge these contaminants. The same is true for wet or humid environments, such as marine, pulp and paper and road construction applications.

When equipment must be operated in or near sensitive waterways, rivers and streams, where the risk of contaminating fish stocks or other marine life is severe, non-toxic, biodegradable greases are available.
