Are You Testing Your Oil Onsite?

Robert Walker, Oil Specialist, Cedar Bayou Power Plant, Centerpoint Energy / Texas Genco

Below are three photos of our on site oil lab at Cedar Bayou Power plant in Baytown TX. At the present we do on site testing for particle counts using the pore blockage method, viscosity, ferrous metals, water testing using Karl Fischer and crackle and filter patches for physical particle and contaminate examination.

Our on site analysis lab provides rapid sample turn around often allowing us to catch problems and remedy them in the same day saving in equipment down time and parts if the equipment had been allowed to continue to run until sample results from the outside lab could be obtained.

On site testing also gives us instant verification that the problem has been corrected and the system is back to normal operation. On site testing is extremely useful when upgrading filters in oil systems by allowing quick sample testing to track filter performance.
