Transitioning to a New Lube Supplier

Kenny Myers, Senior Reliability Engineer, ISP Chemicals

The new supplier bears part of the burden of a smooth transition to the "new" lubricants. A simple compatibility review may be all that is required which could allow mixing of the lubricants. However, in regard to the top-offs, I would assume that there remains some inventory in the plant to satisfy this need.

As machines draw closer to the drain period, the new supplier should furnish a flushing media that will allow a thorough cleaning of the machine prior to introduction of the new lubricant. The larger systems would be treated much similar. If no compatibility between the lubricant brands exists, the new supplier should be able to obtain the existing lubricant (if no inventory is left in the plant), until the system can be drained. Then the same flushing procedure would be followed prior to introduction of the new lubricant. Communication is the key to a successful transition.
