Selecting Machines for Oil Analysis

1. Coming into a new situation, if there were no previous records
of sampling, I would sample all main drive gearboxes and all oil
system reservoirs. On all the samples I would have a spectro chemical
analysis and a standard physical properties analysis done with
a particle count check being added to all systems that are filtered.
2. The second place I would look would naturally be any area
where they are having lubrication related problems. The tests
I would have done would be dictated by the type of problems that
were occurring
3. My next step would be to check oil usage on all equipment.
Hopefully there would be records to check dates of oil changes.
Any areas that would be due for oil changes under the old system
would be my first checks. If the oil came back suitable for continued
use I would cancel the scheduled oil changes. I think this would
be a good start and along with the above, all filtered systems
would be checked for filter usage and any filter related problems.
