Oil Analysis Without Particle Counting?

John Pavlovic, Rental Fleet Service, Finning Canada

Aha! The answer is in the question! The reliability engineer needs to underline the words "large power generation company", and, "samples from critical components" while discussing the continuation of particle counting on samples.

The advance notice of possible or impending failure of any critical component, and the prevention of unscheduled or emergency shutdown (with the resultant costs and drop in generation availability percentages), would more than offset the time and cost of continuing particle counting on samples.

The fact that, until now, very low reportability percentages occurred implies that most of the equipment is operating within its planned component life, but gradual or sudden changes are possible at any time.

There are many positives (reliability, availability, repair costs, consumer confidence, etc) for continuing the obviously well established maintenance and sampling program that is now in place.
