Is Turbine Flush Justified?

Timothy M. Cross, Sr. Mechanical Engineer II, Georgia Gulf Chemicals & Vinyls, LLC

Operations simply needs to answer two questions. Can I accept the risk of a catastrophic bearing failure over the next two years? Can I accept an unscheduled outage during peak demand to inspect the turbine bearings if oil analysis indicates babbit contamination?

If plant management, including the site manager, agree they can accept the risks, then the flush can be deferred. If they can't then the system should be flushed to prevent a mis-diagnosis.
