Justifying an Oil Analysis Program

Bill Moore, Maintenance Mechanic, Tyco Electronics

The manager should have it explained to him that the equipment is more than likely just limping along at a happy rate but probably not at its full potential. Loose tolerances in gearboxes, oil loss due to leaking seals that have been contaminated with worn or broken particles, and even the added power consumption needed to step up the outputs to meet operating requirements should be enough to convince the boss for the need of an oil analysis program.

And if that,s not enough, maybe the threat of inevitable failure and costly downtime should convince him, since he had already been approached with the idea and his neck maybe on the line.
