Justifying an Oil Analysis Program

David M Giacobozzi, Machine Repair/PDM Specialist, American Axle Mfg

In response to this question I would tell him that many OEMs recommend that the customer change their machine oil after so many hours. This time span usually works out to be every 6 months to 1 year. By applying an oil analysis program, the oil will be changed only when the chemistry begins to deteriorate.

In addition, an increase in particle count or a change in viscosity can provide early warning of a impending catastrophic failure. My experience is that oil can be left in the tank for as long as 6 years with no loss of oil performance. The full service life of pumps, valves cylinders, servo's, rotary actuators, and any other related hydraulic components can be realized by the early warning that oil analysis provides, not to mention the decrease in unscheduled downtime to make emergency repairs.
