Justifying an Oil Analysis Program

Larry Simpson, Vibration Analyst / Machine Repairman, Delphi Dayton

If the paper mill has a good PM program the oil in gear boxes will be replaced as per the manufactors recommended time or hours schedule.

When I was in the US Army our mechanics started taking oil samples vehicles in the motor pool. Oil was changed only when recommended by the analyst. We saw five benefits from its program:

1) The mechanics spent less time performing oil changes.
2) The vehicles were not out of service as often as before.
3) There was a large reduction in oil usage.
4) There was a reduced amount of used oil disposal.
5) The analysis program would "flag" engines with internal wear problems.

Oil analysis pays.
