Justifying an Oil Analysis Program

Ray Russell, Predictive Maint Analyst, JEA

An encouraging way to get your lube oil program off the ground is to pull two oil samples from one of your machines that you know that can be visually seen as contaminated and pull samples from one that has been compromised but visually looks good.

Have them analyzed and place the documentation in a folder. Place both samples in front of the manager and ask him/her which one they would run in their personal vehicle, after they make their choice show them the results from the analysis.

Naturally they are going to pick the cleanest looking on but if you can show them through an analysis report that the clean looking oil has been compromised and will cause them problems down the line, they are more apt to assist you in the establishment of your "Oil Analysis Program".
