Unusual Particle Counts Confusing
Michelle Allis, Wearcheck
First check by what means the particle count is measured. When
using an instrument that uses a "visual method" the
particle count measurement can be affected by discoloration, water,
entrained air etc. which will give false readings. External contamination
at sampling could be a factor. Have any of the sampling conditions
changed, i.e. are the samples taken when the oil is at operating
conditions and well mixed or is their a new person taking the
samples? Are all the "after filter" samples being analysed
separately to the "before filter" samples in the lab
as a different operator could be using a different technique etc.
in order to get a different result. If this is so check the standards
run on the instrument to make sure the results coming out of the
lab are reliable.
