Unusual Particle Counts Confusing

Wayne Downes, Lubrication Consultant, Total South Africa

Check where the problematic sample points are located. If the pre-filter sampling point is badly located i.e. on a 'laminar' flow part of the line it is possible that you are not getting a representative sample and the oil can then the pre-filter oil will appear to be quite clean. The filter and filter housing can however create a lot of turbulence thus giving an optimum oil sample after the filter that will be very representative of the 'dirty'oil in your system. It must be kept in mind that one will still find contaminated oil after a filter, unless you are using very efficient expensive filters.
