Bewildering Oil Analysis Results
David Peraza, Lubrication Technician, Cargill Salt
I would investigate the possibility of air bubbles being
entrained in the oil. Also the quality of my sample bottles.
Are they certified clean? If so to what level? Is my sampling
procedure defined and followed by sampling personell.
Maybe an unwanted churning effect is taking place in the
sump. I would check pump flow rates to see if something
has changed. Has anyone increased pressure or performed
maintenance? Did someone possibly change filters and install
the wrong ones? Are my filters in by-pass?
Being currently involved in a similar situation I have
discovered through discussions with our oil analysis lab
that there is a Laser Net Test available that can actually
identify what your particles are. Cutting wear, sliding
wear, fatigue wear, non-mettalic, and air bubbles. We
discovered that our particles are a fibre compound. We
are still troubleshooting to determine the source so I
can't give a resolution but I will update when situation
is resolved.
