Today's Tip: Advice for Buying a Grease Gun

When buying a grease gun, think about what you need it to do. There are high-volume guns that deliver more grease but at about 5,000 pounds maximum pressure. Other high-pressure guns go up to 15,000 pounds but they do not put out as much per stroke. This rating is not displayed on the packaging but often is in the catalog description. Engine oils should reduce friction and wear during extreme, low-temperature start-ups as well as when the lubricating film is subject to high temperatures and pressures in bearings and around the piston rings. While the oil should still flow well and be pumpable without aeration at low temperatures (down to -40C) to avoid metal-to-metal contact during cold start-ups, the lubricating film must perform satisfactorily in bearings and hydraulic tappets.

At low temperatures, additives must not precipitate and the oil must not gel. At the upper end of the temperature scale, the oil must offer far-reaching resistance to thermal and mechanical aging. And finally, the stability of the lubricating film should not be diminished by fuel dilution of up to 10 percent.

Which oil has better pumpability - a 680 mineral or a 680 synthetic?"

Viscosity can be defined as resistance to flow. Pumpability is the inverse of flow resistance. At 40C, both would be exactly the same pumpability by definition. However, at temperatures above 40C, the mineral oil will have superior pumpability. At temperatures below 40C, the synthetic should have better pumpability. This is due to the higher viscosity index (VI) of the synthetic.
