Today's Tip: Caution on Antiseize Compounds |

Repair shops often use copper antisieze compounds when rebuilding pumps, gearboxes, etc. The use of copper antisieze is a poor choice. Use nickel or ceramic (often referred to as parting lubricants) instead of copper to avoid contamination of bearing housing lubricants, which drives plant tribologists crazy!
Copper readings can be particularly alarming when increases are in the hundreds of parts per million. However, huge increases are typically insignificant in terms of component wear. Ironically, small subtle increases in copper are of a higher concern and should be examined closely.
Copper alloy component wear is generally accompanied by lock-step increases in alloy metals such as lead, tin, aluminum and zinc.
The amount of alloy metal present in brass/bronze components is only a small percentage of the total copper content. Changes in these alloys may be only a few parts per million, but should be taken seriously when present with copper increases. (William "Doc" Burke, Reliability Solutions Specialist, A.W. Spell out just what the operator should do for proper equipment care, such as routine checks and records, or checking oil level and condition, removing excess dirt from the equipment, turning in equipment for oil changes and maintenance, and reporting any loose, damaged or deteriorating parts.
Keep operators conscious of the need for continuing inspection including: reporting worn or damaged tubing and hose, foaming or turbulence in the oil reservoir, signs of overheating, oil leaks, loose joints, worn seals, and any unusual noises that might mean cavitation, trapped air, or worn bearings and seals. Encourage the operator to note and report any slowdown of machine operating time that might be an early warning of future problems.

In many companies, it's common practice to review and re-tender MRO contracts on a three- to seven-year cycle. Lubricants are no exception, particularly in today's economy where lubricant prices, like those for every other crude oil-based commodity product, are increasing to unprecedented levels. While this practice is not inherently "bad," there are certain pitfalls which can occur when switching lubricant suppliers.
Beyond the business aspects of a change in supplier - such as price, distribution network, service and support - perhaps the single biggest problem companies face when working with a new supplier is the issue of lubricant incompatibility.

"Do wire ropes require relubrication?"
Wire ropes used in industrial and mining applications wear from the inside out. The individual wires that make up the cable bundles slide and rub against one another as the cable turns around the shiv and drum. Cables are generally lubricated during the manufacturing process. However, the "initial fill" lubricant injected between the wire fibers during manufacturing is quickly squeezed out once the cable is placed under load.
The lubricant should be replenished promptly after first use to assure that the exterior and interior surfaces remain coated with an oil film. Pressurized lubrication collars can be most helpful in accomplishing complete coverage while minimizing waste.
