Today's Tip: Remove Contaminants with a Centrifuge |

Whether producing weapons, foods, medicines or the wide spectrum of lubricating fluids, centrifuges have successfully performed their superior separating duties for many decades. A bypass centrifugal fluid cleaner falls into one of two broad categories: powered and self-powered.
Powered centrifuges use either a properly sized pump and motor package or a mechanical direct couple that will easily drive the centrifuge when insufficient or no system pressure is available. Self-powered centrifuges use system pressure that may require a suitable regulator to maintain a constant oil supply pressure (85 to 100 psi) if the system pressure is too high for safe operation.

Maintaining spares and redundant machinery in a prime state, ready for operation, can be a daunting proposition, particularly given that most of the planet is covered with a substance that tends to attack these stored and standby machines. We call the substance water. It is vital to life, health, happiness and keeping the wheels turning in the wide world of manufacturing. Water also has the distinct potential to wreck idle industrial machines.
Machinery can be idle from intermittent use, stand-by (redundancy), storage for spare parts, or for temporary decommissioning. This article looks at practices that protect equipment characterized as decommissioned, shortterm storage or storage of standby capacity.

Preserving or inhibiting corrosion of inactive process machinery depends on the type of equipment, expected length of inactivity and the time required to restore the equipment to service. Tip: Avoid Grease Line Problems |
|
Bearings that receive grease from a remote location have special needs and require special consideration. When installing a grease line to a remote bearing, make the grease line as short as possible, and if possible, avoid shape or 90-degree bends. Shallower 45-degree bends, or radial bends, will lower the friction loss as the grease is pumped to the bearing. Use the largest diameter grease line that is practical; this will also reduce friction losses.
There is a trade-off between reducing friction losses and the amount or volume of grease that will remain within the grease line. The grease that fills the grease line will age along with the grease in the bearing. This volume should be added to the amount which must be purged from the bearing.
If the bearing is critical, it may be advisable to install an electrically operated valve in the grease line near the bearing. This will allow the grease retained within the grease line to be expelled prior to sending new grease to the bearing. This will reduce the amount of old grease that must pass through the bearing before new grease is admitted to the bearing.
The cost of the volume of grease purged or expelled and the cost of an electric bypass valve can be justified by the increase in bearing life and the reduction in unscheduled downtime for bearing maintenance or replacement (due to supplying aged and possibly contaminated grease to a critical bearing).
